Careers today can—and should—connect with our values. You don’t have to leave your identity at the door to succeed. Whether you’re starting your journey, looking to change paths, or stepping into leadership, there’s a place for your voice, your culture, and your skills in the workforce. Mob have always led with resilience, and in workplaces across the country, we’re doing it again.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
Looking for a job can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re navigating systems that haven’t always welcomed mob. But you’re not alone. There are culturally safe employers, community-run training programs, and job boards—like Indigenous Employment Australia’s — that are built to support you. Take time to connect with mentors, ask questions, and reach out to services that understand where you’re coming from.
Sometimes the first step is just believing that you belong in that space. You do.
Lead with Your Strengths – and Your Story
Your cultural knowledge, community involvement, and lived experiences are strengths. Have you led a youth group? Supported family through Sorry Business? Helped care for Country or language? These are real-life leadership and problem-solving skills that employers value. When applying for roles, don’t be afraid to share how your background helps you connect with others and bring new perspectives to a team.
There are also growing opportunities in industries where First Nations voices are vital—like land and sea management, health, education, social work, and business. Your story matters in these spaces.
Remember: A Strong Future Means a Strong Community
When one of us succeeds, we all succeed. Building your future helps your family, your mob, and your community. And it creates a ripple effect—encouraging younger generations to see what’s possible. This month, as we prepare for NAIDOC Week and celebrate the trailblazers who came before us, let’s also look forward. What kind of future do you want to create? And how can your career play a part?
You have a right to work in places where your culture is respected, your skills are valued, and your voice is heard. Keep going. Your future is strong—and it starts today.
