How to Know If an Employer Truly Supports Mob – Before You Apply

A job might look good on paper, but what’s it really like for mob on the inside? Not every workplace understands cultural safety, identity, or the realities of being Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Here’s how to find out before you apply.

Tip 1: Check their Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP)
Do they have one? Is it current? Look for actions around hiring, mentoring, cultural leave, and supporting community.

Tip 2: Look for identified roles
Do they advertise Aboriginal-identified or targeted roles? That shows they’re making space for mob in meaningful positions.

Tip 3: Review their language
Do their job ads mention cultural capability, values, or partnerships with Indigenous communities – or is it all generic?

Tip 4: Ask questions in the interview
Ask:

  • “Do you have an Indigenous staff network?”
  • “How do you support cultural leave?”
  • “How is reconciliation supported in the workplace?”

Tip 5: Talk to someone who’s worked there
Ask around. Word of mouth is powerful. If mob have felt unsafe or unsupported, you’ll hear about it.

Conclusion:
You deserve a workplace that respects you – not just hires you. Asking the right questions early can help you avoid disappointment and find a job that uplifts your whole self.
